四方当代美术馆成立于2005年8月，分别坐落在南京的玄武区、浦口区与江宁区，共有展览面积近8000平方米，是面向中国当代艺术，以展览、收藏、研究、教育为主要功能，以改善中国当代艺术的生存环境，提高公众对当代艺术的认知度，倡导当代艺术与全社会进行交流为宗旨的复合型民间艺术机构。我馆专门委托享有国际声誉的美国建筑大师StevenHoll先生与著名奥地利前卫建筑师RainerPirker先生分别设计浦口区与江宁区两处展馆建筑，以构建符合展示当代艺术气质的空间。
FoundedinAugust2005,NanjingSquareGalleryofContemporaryArtsetsherexhibitionplacesinXuanwuDistrict,PukouDistrictandJiangningDistrictinNanjingseparately,whichare8000squaremetersintotal.It’sanunofficiallycompoundartinstitution,withthemainfunctionsofexhibition,preservation,researchandeducation.TheprincipleofthisgalleryistoreformtheenvironmentforcontemporaryChineseart,improvethepublicunderstandingofit,andpromotethecommunicationbetweencontemporaryartandthewholesociety.Tocreatetheproperspace,whichcouldhelpshowingcontemporaryart,thegalleryinvitedtheworld-knownAmericanarchitectMr.StevenHollandAustrianarchitectMr.RainerPirkertodesignthesetwoexhibitionbuildingsinPukouDistrictandJiangningDistrictrespectively.
我馆计划在美术馆馆体建筑落成以后，每五年举办一届当代艺术大型文献展。并且为了及时反映当代艺术思想观念的变化趋向，我馆将不定期举办有建设性的主题展览，以调动本地区当代艺术的学术气氛。馆内还将针对中国一百多年的异于传统的视觉表达史，专门开辟了重要艺术家作品的永久性陈列馆，常年向公众开放，并且将开设关于当代艺术的讲座向公众普及当代艺术的知识。我馆将根据自身条件，广泛地开展当代艺术方面的地区与国际性的民间交流合作，参与国际性当代艺术活动，将四方当代美术馆建设成公众了解当代艺术一扇的窗口，艺术家创作当代艺术一座的基地，学者研究当代艺术一个的中心。
